Star Trek: The Experience – Update

Some may already know this, but others may not.

Yesterday, on TREKMOVIE.com website there is an article regarding the future of Star Trek: The Experience. This is the first news that has come my way in awhile that is positive. My numerous trips to Las Vegas with my wife have been fruitless in any information. As many times as we party with the the former employees (actors & bartenders) each time in Vegas, they know nothing. Our friends there have not been able to dig up any intel by searching for any permits that have been pulled to build or demo the Neonopolis, that is usually the first step in any construction project.

The article is very positive on the future of STTE re-opening. Now the date is 2012…maybe. CBS is committed to working with Neonopolis and that is good to hear. What may be sad for some reasons and great for other reasons, props, signs, chairs from STTE will be auctioned off in the near future. The article explains that as much as the items are/were nice at STTE 1.0, they may not fit exactly at STTE 2.0 because all these things were custom made for that Hilton location. I am sure some things will remain for the new location but a lot will be gone. Perhaps, even the ship models that hung from the ceiling will be auctioned off. I want to bid on the drink replicator that was behind the bar from which the Borg Spheres & Warp Cores were made.

At this point, no one has any idea of what the place will look like or contain. Will it still have the rides? Who knows, they are going to auction off the ride seats. Maybe they will have new seats is a new ride?? Will it be 24th century again? Or will it be all Trek eras, including some thing from Star Trek 09? We don’t know, but I am glad that they still plan on going through with it.

Help Support the Constellation Project

Star Trek historians Michael and Denise Okuda sent TrekWeb the following message today :

February 8, 2010

Dear Friends:

As long-time supporters of real-life space exploration, Denise and I were disappointed to learn that the proposed NASA budget for 2011 would cancel Project Constellation and the planned return to the Moon. Constellation, as you may know, began in 2004, after the tragic loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia and its crew. NASA was determined to make spaceflight safer for its astronauts, and it knew that it had to give those astronauts a worthwhile mission: Exploring the final frontier.

Constellation is tasked with developing boosters, spacecraft, and other systems to provide a safer replacement for the Space Shuttle, one that would enable a return to the Moon for the specific purpose of developing the ability for humans to live on another world. Unlike Apollo, Constellation is designed to run on a comparatively constrained budget. Constellation’s Ares boosters are based on Space Shuttle technology, reducing their development costs and improving safety and reliability.

Since 2004, NASA has made a lot of progress with Constellation. New rocket engines have been designed and tested. A new launch pad has been built at the Kennedy Space Center, and a massive new launch tower has just been completed. Prototype Orion capsules are being tested, even as prototype moon rovers are trekking through the desert. Design work on Altair lunar landers and next-generation space suits is well underway. And last October, NASA conducted the successful first launch of Project Constellation, the Ares I-X Development Test Flight. We’re finally on our way back to the Moon, and heading out to Mars.

Now, the administration has proposed to cancel Constellation in favor of a “flexible path” of technology development and the use of commercial launch services for astronauts to get into orbit. While technology development is a very good idea, it’s not a substitute for an actual mission with a real goal. Without a goal and a specific plan, we believe that NASA, however well-intentioned, will simply end up spending a lot of money without actually going anywhere. It’s happened before. We don’t want it to happen again. And while we believe that commercial spaceflight will be a reality in the relatively near future, the fact is that no such capability exists yet. Spaceflight is a difficult, dangerous enterprise, and it would be foolish to gamble the future of our nation’s space program by abandoning systems that are already well into development. With so much progress already made, we believe that canceling Constellation would be a serious mistake.

The good news is that the proposed budget is just that: A proposal. Over the next few weeks the Congress will review the proposal and will make whatever changes it deems necessary. Constellation can be saved if members of Congress – and the President – see that their constituents want it. That’s why we’re asking you to support Constellation by writing to the President and to your elected representatives.

Here’s a website that we’ve put together with more information on Constellation, plus resources on how to reach your elected officials.

Space exploration is vital source of technology and innovation for our society. The space program is one of the most effective means to stimulate economic growth, both in the short term and the long run. And exploration inspires our young people, even as it helps us comprehend the wonders of the final frontier, now and in the future. Please join us in making that future a reality by writing letters and by spreading the word to your friends. We very much need your help, and we need it today.

Sincerely,
-Mike and Denise Okuda

‘Star Trek 2′ Beams Up June 2012 Release Date

Last summer’s ‘Star Trek’ reboot was one of the most successful unions in recent Hollywood memory, as the blockbuster married modern sensibilities (courtesy of J. J. Abrams) with beloved fan favorites (the iconic figures of Kirk, Spock and Bones). So it’s only fitting that the franchise has issued another staple of every successful wedding: a save the date card.

Yes, according to Cinematical, Paramount has served notice to the moviemaking world that ‘Star Trek 2′ will be landing in theaters on June 29, 2012. That date, of course, means that ‘Star Trek 2′ will be hitting screens just in time for the Fourth of July crowds, which in the past have turned other sci-fi films into out-of-this-world blockbusters (see: ‘Independence Day’ and ‘Transformers’).

The announcement also suggests that the studio is confident the film will be ready by the summer of 2012, which isn’t a given considering such minor details as the story and plot have yet to be worked out. Still, over the last few weeks, signs have been pointing to a summer 2012 release — actress Zoe Saldana, for instance, who plays Uhura, indicated last month that she had been told production would begin on the film at the end of this year — so the announcement isn’t a huge surprise.

Whether or not ‘Star Trek 2′ can live up to expectations, however, remains to be seen, considering the film is likely to face strong competition. While it is still too early to know the full slate of 2012’s summer blockbusters, one of the most anticipated films in recent memory, Marvel’s ‘The Avengers,’ has already laid claim to a May 4 release date. While that movie, which will bring together the stars of Marvel’s solo films (including ‘Iron Man’ and 2011’s ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America’), is unlikely to be a factor by the time ‘Star Trek’ lands two months later, another comic book blockbuster, ‘Wolverine 2,’ is still searching for a weekend to call its own.

Of course, for most Trekkies, the film’s biggest competition will always remain the original franchise, making the rumored decision to include classic villain Khan in the upcoming movie a particularly interesting one.”The fun of where we are on the sequel is we could use some of what was done before in a new way,” Abrams told Sci-Fi Wire recently. “But we haven’t even figured out what we would use yet, so it’s very early on.”

Now we know exactly how early it is.

A “Star Trek” Sequel
J.J. Abrams’ reboot of this venerable sci-fi franchise reeled in $385 million worldwide — you better believe a sequel is in the works. Zoe Saldana plays the sultry alien Uhura, who resists the advances of James Kirk and finds out she actually has a thing for Spock. So when might we see a “Star Trek” sequel?

Said Saldana in a recent MTV interview, “I spoke to J.J. and Bryan Burk, his producing partner at Bad Robot, and they are still in the middle of building the script with Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci, and we’ll probably be going into pre-production around this time next year.”
